Living for God. Leading at Home

The First Ministry of Every Man: Loving God Above All

Introduction: More Than Just Roles

Most men carry heavy titles: provider, protector, husband, father, worker. From the moment we wake up, the weight of those responsibilities presses in. It’s easy to assume these roles define us, but if we’re not careful, they become idols—good gifts elevated above the Giver.

The Bible reminds us that before we are anything else, we are sons of God. And the first ministry of every man is not to his career, not even to his family—it is to God Himself.

The Greatest Commandment

“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”

Matthew 22:37

When asked what the greatest commandment is, Jesus didn’t talk about success at work, devotion to family, or even service in the church. He pointed to love—total devotion to God above everything else.

This is our starting line. Until we learn to love God first, we will struggle to love our wives, children, and communities well.

1. Your Identity Comes from Him, Not Your Role

Our culture defines manhood by performance:

  • How much money we make.
  • How strong or successful we appear.
  • How well we “provide.”

But Scripture says something different:

  • We are sons of God (John 1:12).
  • We are His workmanship (Ephesians 2:10).
  • We are chosen and beloved (Colossians 3:12).

Roles change. Jobs come and go. Children grow up. But your identity as a child of God never shifts. Anchoring your worth in Him steadies you when everything else feels unstable.

2. Why Your Family Needs a Man Anchored in God

A father without a prayer life is like a captain without a compass. He may row with all his strength, but the boat still drifts.

  • For your wife: She doesn’t just need a provider; she longs for a husband who leads in love and prayer (Ephesians 5:25).
  • For your children: Kids imitate what we model more than what we say. A father grounded in Christ shows them where to run when life gets hard.
  • For your legacy: A man who walks with God leaves a ripple effect across generations (Deuteronomy 6:6–7).

Your presence matters—but your spiritual presence matters most.

3. Practical Habits of God-First Men

How do we move from theory to practice? Here are seven daily and weekly habits that help men put God first:

  1. Start with Scripture Before Screens
Open the Word before opening your phone. Even five minutes grounds your day.
  2. Dedicate Daily Time to Prayer
Short, honest conversations with God matter more than polished words.
  3. Lead Family Prayer
Pray with your wife and children—at meals, bedtime, or during crises. Don’t underestimate the power of simple prayers spoken out loud.
  4. Memorize and Meditate
Hide God’s Word in your heart (Psalm 119:11). Try one verse a week.
  5. Sabbath Rest
Once a week, step back from busyness. Model to your family that God is the one who sustains, not your work.
  6. Accountability with Brothers in Christ
Find men who will ask the hard questions and encourage you toward holiness.
  7. Worship with Your Whole Life
Worship isn’t just Sunday singing. It’s how you work, how you love, how you serve.

4. Common Obstacles (and How to Overcome Them)

Even with the best intentions, men face barriers to putting God first.

  • Busyness → Solution: schedule time with God the same way you would a meeting. Protect it.
  • Distraction → Solution: create a prayer spot free of devices, or use audio Bible apps on commutes.
  • Shame/Guilt → Solution: remember Romans 8:1—“There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.” God isn’t waiting to punish you; He’s inviting you closer.
  • Isolation → Solution: plug into a men’s group or form one. Growth happens in community.

“As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.”

Joshua 24:15

5. Biblical Examples of Men Who Loved God First

  • Abraham: Trusted God even when it meant leaving everything familiar.
  • David: Called “a man after God’s own heart” despite failures.
  • Joshua: Declared, “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
  • Jesus Himself: Modeled time with the Father, often withdrawing to pray.

Each of these men had flaws, but their defining strength was faith in God above all else.

6. Encouragement for Husbands and Fathers

Your wife and children don’t need perfection. They need a man who is faithfully pursuing God. Every step you take toward Him shapes the spiritual climate of your home.

When you put God first:

  • You’ll lead your wife with humility.
  • You’ll disciple your children with joy.
  • You’ll leave a legacy that points to Christ.

Conclusion: The Overflow of Loving God

At the end of the day, your greatest ministry is not your career or even your family—it is your love for God. From that wellspring flows everything else: your marriage, your fatherhood, your leadership.

Start small. Take ten minutes today to be with the Lord—open His Word, speak to Him, and listen in silence.
